Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Speaker of the House of Assembly Arthur Holder teamed up yet again – not on the floor of the chamber but at the National Botanical Gardens – for an annual party with children from their two constituencies, St Michael North East and St Michael Central.
Reflecting on the event, Mottley, the St Michael North East MP underscored its significance, particularly in the context of the post-COVID-19 period. Having organised similar events for over three decades, she highlighted the deeper value of community engagement and connection, especially for children who faced social limitations during restrictive periods.
“After COVID, I gained a greater respect for why we have to be there for each other and why events like this matter,” she said. “I have been doing this now, since 1991 so that’s over 32 years. But the reality is – look at the kids – this speaks a thousand words.”
Mottley emphasised the need for a suitable venue in light of the pandemic’s impact, choosing the park to provide an open space for the children to enjoy.
St Michael Central MP Holder echoed Mottley’s sentiments, focusing on the importance of such gatherings for constituents of all ages to come together, socialise, and participate in the festivities. He highlighted the event’s growth over the years, expressing his commitment to continuing his representation of constituents in the coming year.
“As you can see, there are quite a lot of young people who come out to enjoy the festivities and get the opportunity to mix with their own and it is growing and growing and growing,” Holder said.
He spoke about the event as a chance for people to reconnect, especially considering the challenges posed by work and school commitments.
“This is what I do, this is what I enjoy – being among the people and with the people, and I hope that I can continue to be a good representative for the people,” said the House Speaker and attorney-at-law. “This is what I know. This is where I came from. This is what I enjoy doing – mixing with my people. You can’t want it better than this.”
