During the official opening ceremony to mark Barbados Sailing Week 2024, competitors in the Junior Dinghy Regatta were rewarded on Sunday at the Barbados Cruising Club for their efforts following two days of intense competition.
Even though it was the first time sailing for several of the participants, they all showed their tenacity as they competed in challenging conditions in four categories.
Copping first place finishes were Joseph Whelan, Alexander McGaw, Asher McKenzie, and Jozef Dass.
Giving an update on the 10-day event, head of the organisational committee Marianna Polacka explained that registration for all participants would continue on January 15 and 16.
The roster of activities includes two days of remote-controlled boat racing at Golden Pond, St Philip, while coastal racing begins at Carlisle Bay on Thursday and Saturday.
The highly anticipated Mount Gay Round Barbados will take place on Sunday.
Asher Mackenzie McGaw was among the winners.
Also present at the ceremony was Kamal Springer, Manager of Sports at the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc, who highlighted the importance of the event.
“We get to show off our coastal assets for sure, let people see our beautiful ocean and let people see our beautiful coastline. That is very important for us and to make sure we have a diverse set of tourism coming in, people from all over the world, people from all different backgrounds it is really important.
“Sailing happens all throughout the year in Barbados, so this is just a touch point for the rest of the year. We want to keep it going, so it’s a really important activity for us, and we are really happy that we are continuing to do well and put it on every year,” Springer said.
