Members of Parliament visited schools in their constituencies to give Class 4 students words of advice ahead of Tuesday’s Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination.
Member of Parliament for St Michael West Central Ian Gooding-Edghill and his team distributed exam kits to about 40 students at Lawrence T. Gay Memorial School.
He told the students to give of their best and to reflect on the advice their teachers would have given them during their lessons.
Gooding-Edghill also announced plans to assist the school with building an auditorium as they currently hold assembly outdoors and that is affected during adverse weather conditions.
Principal of the school Brent Blackett thanked the MP for his kind gesture. He added that any upgrades to the school plant would go a long way in improving students’ education experience.
Over in Christ Church East, MP Wilfred Abrahams visited two primary schools – St Christopher Primary and St Bartholomew Primary – in his constituency on Monday.
He engaged in open discussions with the students, allowing them the opportunity to share their thoughts on the upcoming exam. Abrahams revealed that the students also shared practical tips with each other, emphasising the importance of basic, yet often overlooked, preparations.
The MP reflected on his own experience in the exam over four decades ago, as he shared personal insights and reassured the students.
“The most important thing is just do your best,” he told them, stressing that effort was more important than outcome. “That is the best advice I can ever give you in approaching anything of significance. Just go in there and do your best. Nobody can expect any more from you.”
Acknowledging the inevitable mix of outcomes from such exams, Abrahams added: “Everybody is not going to go to the same school. Some are going to be disappointed but at the end of the day, that’s the end of your primary school life.”
The member of Parliament said his visit aimed to inspire a sense of confidence and calm, reminding students that the effort they put in is the true measure of success.
