Renaldo Stevenson Kirkley Carter shot cousin Jason to death over breakfast on New Year’s Day nine years ago, a High Court jury found late Tuesday.
In a nine-to-three majority verdict, the 12-member jury in the No. 5 Supreme Court found him guilty of manslaughter, after failing to reach a unanimous decision as to whether he murdered Jason Carter at their 1st Avenue Vauxhall, Christ Church home on New Year’s Day 2015.
An argument between the two cousins over how the killer used up breakfast food spilt outside of the house, the court heard. After a loud explosion, Carter was seen walking away from his cousin, who was lying on the ground.
Carter told the police that during the quarrel he went outside and Jason followed. “I saw him with something in his hand, he jump on me, and we started to struggle. I tried to get ‘way, but he grabbed me, and I heard a loud sound and he drop to the ground. I was so frightened, I get up and run ‘way,” his statement read.
Justice Pamela Beckles adjourned the case until July 30, pending pre-sentence, psychiatric and psychological reports.
Principal State Counsel Olivia Davis and State Counsel Eleazar Williams prosecuted the case while attorney Marlon Gordon represented Carter.
