Three left homeless after St Joseph blaze

A house fire in Lammings, St Joseph, left three people without a home on Thursday evening.

The Barbados Fire Service responded to the incident after receiving an alert at approximately 5 p.m.

Station Officer Damian Bayne reported that two water tenders and eight officers from the St John and Arch Hall fire stations were dispatched to the rural parish upon receiving the call.

“On arrival, we found a house engulfed in flames, and we were able to quickly bring the fire under control,” he said.

While no injuries were reported, the fire resulted in the complete loss of the home’s contents.

Eglon Ishmael, one of the occupants, described the incident as “a strange experience”. He recounted noticing smoke emanating from one of the windows as he was returning home.

“I was away from home and then suddenly when I got by the house, I saw smoke coming from the window,” Ishmael recalled. “I called my neighbour and he came and went into the house through the back door. But then as we got into the middle of the house, there was so much smoke… he said call the fire service. Everybody that was in the area came to help. It was so much smoke in a short space of time.”

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined, and investigations are ongoing.
