Despite looming concerns over Hurricane Beryl, hundreds of revellers flocked to Neil’s Plantation, St Michael, for the 10th edition of Awaken: the Ultra-Premium Breakfast Party on Sunday.
The event, widely regarded as the unofficial start to the Crop Over season, saw long queues of traffic approaching from both directions for its 4 a.m. scheduled start.
The sold-out fête, held at a new, expansive venue, welcomed attendees with branded paraphernalia upon arrival. Whilst earlier rains left some areas muddy, partygoers found ample space to set up, with windy conditions offering respite from the sun.
A selection of Barbados’ top chefs, including Creig Greenidge, Marvin Applewhaite and Trevon Stoute, manned food stations, ensuring a variety of culinary delights. Premium drinks were readily available from multiple bars, whilst a coconut water station catered to those seeking refreshment. A dedicated ‘sober zone’ provided a comfortable retreat for those needing a break.
Despite some initial sound system issues, a lineup of top DJs kept the crowd entertained until live performances began, backed by Darrien Bailey’s band. Mikey thrilled with both old favourites and 2024 releases, including H.O.T.P. (Heart of the Party) and Obsession.
Rupee‘s appearance sparked hysteria, as he delivered classics such as Insomnia and Tempted to Touch, alongside his new release Trust Issues. The artist paid tribute to his late friend, Dr Donna Matthew, before concluding with I am a Bajan.
Lil Rick energised the crowd with Can’t Wait and his 2024 release Tsunami, joined by TC for Jammers and King Bubba for their collaboration Soca Therapy. Grateful Co and Keelz also featured in the performances.
Speaking post-event, organising committee member Terencia TC Coward-Thompson revealed considerations to make the new venue their permanent home. She highlighted the emphasis on branding for the 10th instalment: “We wanted to upgrade the entire setting, and try to raise the level of what we were offering to patrons with the various add-ons.”
“We wanted to use the best of what Barbados had to provide,” she added, noting the inclusion of top-rated chefs and a live band among the event’s enhancements.
