Cherita Odell, a former Olympian and current sports commentator, delivered a thought-provoking speech at the official opening ceremony for the fourth edition of Barbados Olympic Association’s (BOA) National Session for Young Participants at the Barbados Beach Club.
“The Olympics were a life-changing experience. It was an honour to represent my country and compete against the best athletes in the world,” Odell said.
She shared a captivating story about her experience at the Olympic Games.
“I had the incredible privilege of representing Barbados at the Olympics,” Odell began. “It was a dream come true.” She recalled a particularly memorable moment during a practice meet, held in pouring rain. Despite the challenging conditions, Odell’s determination and excitement propelled her forward.
“I remember hitting that board, feeling the adrenaline rush, and visualising myself standing on the podium a week later,” she said. “It was an exhilarating experience.”
Then she felt it, her hamstring had torn in three places and before she was able to compete at the pinnacle of her sport, the dream was over. A couple days of tears followed as she had to sit out the rest of the Olympics though she did stay in the athlete village.
Odell transitioned into the main theme of her speech: the role of athletes in fostering unity. She argued that sports have the power to bring people together, regardless of their cultural or national backgrounds.
“The Olympic Games are a symbol of unity,” Odell explained. “They showcase the best of humanity and inspire people to overcome adversity.”
Odell highlighted several examples of how athletes have used their platforms to promote unity and social change. She emphasised the importance of athletes speaking out on important issues and using their influence to inspire others.
“Athletes have a unique responsibility to be role models,” Odell said. “They can use their platform to promote positive values and inspire change.”
In conclusion, Odell urged the audience to appreciate the power of sports to unite people and foster a sense of community. She emphasised the importance of athletes using their platforms to promote positive change and inspire others. (CG)
