“God has determined the periods and the boundaries of our dwelling places. Wherever you are in the moving process, let it be an opportunity to seek the Lord. Remember that he is actually not far from each one of us.” – Acts 17:26–27
During the past 11 years living in Trinidad, we frequently visited Barbados. However, this time marks a significant change. We are not here for a two-week vacation living out of a suitcase; we have moved to Barbados to begin the next stage of our lives.
Transitioning to a new environment requires acclimating to unfamiliar accommodations. In Barbados and Trinidad, the external temperatures are incredibly high this time of year. Trinidad’s affordable electricity allowed us to enjoy the luxury of air-conditioned comfort year-round. Our windows were seldom opened in the summer months. Barbados presents a different reality.
The cost of electricity here is seven times higher, compelling us to adjust to restricted air conditioning in stark contrast to our previous lives. Our past visits to Barbados typically occurred during the cooler months of Christmas and Easter vacations, making the adjustment even more pronounced.
Thank goodness our new home offers abundant cupboard space, accommodating the personal belongings we felt we had to bring. The unpacking of items that accompanied and preceded us has been almost completed. While most of our items have arrived, we await others still en route by sea.
The first two weeks were akin to a vacation. We sampled the local cuisine of nearby restaurants and frequented the Brighton farmer’s market on Saturday mornings, an ideal setting to reconnect with friends and colleagues.
Now, as senior citizens, our lifestyle has shifted. We have spent the last week organising for the myriad of tasks essential to the settling-in routine. From securing the optimal phone system (Internet services were already in place) to home cooking, cleaning, and procuring fresh produce, each task is part of our new routine. We’ve also focused on our health and wellness through walking exercises, sea baths, and arranging medical care. The support from family and friends has made the transition smooth.
As we settle into our new space, I have found the radio call in the programme Down to Brass Tacks particularly insightful. It provides a window into the pulse of society as we reintegrate.
While challenging, this new chapter of our lives is equally rewarding. From acclimating to the climate to reconnecting with familiar faces and establishing routines, each step has deepened our appreciation for this fresh start. While the change in pace and environment brings new dynamics, it offers an opportunity for reflection and growth.
As we embrace this transition, we do so with grace and gratitude, trusting that, as always, God’s presence guides us through this season of life.
