Williams and Kirton into doubles semis

One of the top contenders to win the men’s doubles in the Roberts Manufacturing Open Senior National, Seanon Williams and Zane Kirton continue to demonstrate that they are a good combination on the tennis court. Their quarterfinal match was played Wednesday.

Facing off against Cristian Blunte and Kenton Gamble on Court One, Williams, an experienced campaigner in Barbados lawn tennis and younger charge Kirton, the reigning national Under-14 champion, broke a 5-5 deadlock to win in straight sets 7-5, 6-0.

Kirton’s frontcourt volleys and Williams hard hitting baseline returns, which they are known to fearlessly play, were unstoppable in their quarterfinal match against Blunte and Gamble at the National Tennis Centre in Wildey.

Even though they did not advance to the semifinal, credit to Blunte and Gamble for taking the chance and not backing down too easily, particularly in the first set.

It turned out to be a battle of wills on Court Five. The tennis was top notch as in the other men’s doubles quarterfinal match featuring winners Simon Lewis and Thomas O’Neill taking on Akeem Gustave and Dario Parris.

The match concluded with Lewis and O’Neill, another favourite pair for the men’s doubles title, getting over the finish line 6-4, 6-3 in a hard fought game. Just as competitive in the end was the quarter-final won by Aidan Clarke and Curt Seifert 6-1, 6-4 when they met Ryan Batson and Neil King.

Luckily for Justin Atkins and Carron Beckles, they won by a walkover after the Moseley brothers Russell and Ryan, were unable to play because of unforeseen circumstances.

Two singles were also played in the men’s Over-45 singles semi-final. Junior King won by walkover against Derrick Hastick while Matthew Weir defeated Jonathan Bayne 6-2, 6-1.

That means King and Weir will play each other tomorrow, Friday, in the men’s Over-45 final. In addition, Neil King and Thomas O’Neill are also going to be locked in a singles battle for the opportunity to be crowned the Roberts Manufacturing Open Senior Men’s National Champion.
