Springer Memorial School celebrates 60th anniversary

The Springer Memorial School celebrated its 60th anniversary with a service on Sunday, where faith, resilience, and a bold vision for the future emerged as the key themes of the event.

The service, held at Dunamis Outreach Ministries, brought together students, alumni, staff, and special guests to reflect on the school’s remarkable journey and look forward to even greater accomplishments.

Reverend Carlos Brathwaite, the former pastor of Dunamis Outreach Ministries, delivered an impassioned address, setting the tone for the anniversary celebration. He proclaimed a prophetic vision for the school, predicting that it would soon produce its first Barbados Scholar from among the newer secondary schools.

“Soon and very soon, Springer Memorial School will be the first of the newer secondary schools to produce a Barbados Scholar and/or Exhibition winner. In the name of God the Father and God the Son,” he declared, as the congregation responded with resounding applause.

The cleric linked this vision to the school’s enduring faith, urging students and staff to maintain their belief in God as they strive for academic excellence. “Self-belief through God is faith, confidence in God, that with God’s help, you are going to achieve what seems impossible,” he emphasised.

Brathwaite also reflected on the school’s past struggles and achievements, particularly in sports and academics, reminding the community that perseverance is key. “It has taken Springer Memorial 60 years to receive this vision… Even when you were ruling the athletic scene in Barbados, it was also a struggle. But thank God, with perseverance and with diligence, you were able to rule.”

Meanwhile, the school’s Principal, Cheryl Gill, expressed her pride in the school’s legacy and reiterated her commitment to fostering excellence among students. She emphasised that faith and community have always been central to the school’s success and will continue to be so in the future.

“Our journey has not been without challenges, but God has been faithful, and we have been able to overcome hurdles,” Gill remarked, thanking the school’s staff, alumni, and students for their continued support.

She also echoed Brathwaite’s vision for academic excellence, highlighting the school’s role in nurturing well-rounded young women. “We remain committed to nurturing well-rounded young women who are not only academically accomplished but equipped with compassion, confidence, and the critical thinking skills to excel in every field,” Gill said.

As the school steps into its next chapter, the principal emphasises the importance of unity and resilience. “Together, let us continue to write the next chapter of this school’s extraordinary legacy. May the next 60 years be filled with blessings, growth, and success,” she noted.

The service was a celebration not only of the school’s past but also a rallying cry for its future. As Brathwaite declared, “With God on your side, failure is not final. Springer Memorial Secondary School will rise again.” (RG)
