Gun violence on Sundays sparks BWU concern

The Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) has delivered a stark warning of an alarming trend of gun-related incidents occurring on consecutive Sundays, directly affecting workers and shaking the nation’s sense of security.

The union’s call to action comes as Barbados grapples with its third murder of the year, urging citizens to break their silence and actively participate in crime prevention.

Expressing solidarity with the worker injured in the latest shooting occurrence, General Secretary Toni Moore, in a press statement, said: “On behalf of the Barbados Workers’ Union, I wish to express our deepest concern and prayers for the worker who was injured in yesterday’s shooting incident at Kirton’s Gas Station in St. Philip.

“We stand with this worker, his family, and all who have been impacted by this act of violence, hoping for a full and speedy recovery.”

Moore also referenced last week’s shooting involving KFC employees: “This latest incident has left us now with two consecutive Sundays marred by violence on a day that most Barbadians hold dear and sacred. This cannot be who we are or what we allow our country to become.”

The BWU urged Barbadians to act, highlighting the role of the public in addressing the issue.

“If you see something, say something. If you are a family member, a friend, or even just a concerned neighbour, and you know that someone is hiding a weapon or engaging in activities that threaten the safety of others, potentially and actually, please speak up,” Moore said.

“For the love of your own loved one who could become a victim—or for the sake of someone else’s innocent child—do not remain silent.”

The BWU official further called for national unity and leadership in combating violence.

“We call on all citizens to stand together in saying enough is enough, and we continue to encourage all other leaders of organisations to step up in this fight as we encourage each other through word and deed to condemn these vicious acts,” she said.

“Every act of violence tears at the fabric of our society, but every act of courage and accountability strengthens it.”

She urged Barbadians to work together to reject violence and rebuild a sense of community and safety, stating, “Let us reject the path of violence and instead rebuild our sense of care and commitment to each other. Unity is strength.”
