Barbados celebrated a milestone in cruise tourism as Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas made its inaugural port-of-call at Bridgetown.
The state-of-the-art vessel, with a guest capacity exceeding 5 000, arrived on Wednesday, marking a significant boost to the country’s thriving cruise industry.
The Odyssey of the Seas, part of Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class fleet, is homeported in New York and made its maiden voyage in July 2021. Boasting a crew of 1 663 international staff, the ship offers passengers 16 dining experiences, six bars and lounges, and more than 20 additional world-class amenities.
Marsha Alleyne, chief product development officer at Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., expressed gratitude for the ship’s arrival: “We are thankful that you have brought this marquee ship to our island. It truly represents the strong partnership between Barbados and Royal Caribbean.”
A release from BTMI said the visit underscores Barbados’ growing reputation as a premier destination for luxury cruising in the Caribbean. It also marks the return of Captain Markey to the island after a 12-year absence, having first visited when he was appointed to his captaincy.
Cruise tourism continues to be a vital component of Barbados’ economy. Recent statistics from the Barbados Statistical Service reveal a substantial growth in cruise passenger arrivals. From January to November 2024, the island welcomed 649 125 cruise visitors, representing a 23 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023, which saw 526 114 arrivals.
The arrival of the Odyssey of the Seas is seen as another important step in the continued growth and success of Barbados as a leading Caribbean cruise destination, according to the BTMI. It stressed that Barbados remains committed to providing exceptional experiences for its visitors, combining world-class amenities and luxury accommodations with its rich cultural and natural offerings.
