Hardworking centenarian celebrates with loved ones

A Christ Church woman’s journey from a hardworking cook to a revered matriarch of six embodying a century of resilience and familial devotion was celebrated on Friday as Justica Sophia Walters marked her centennial milestone surrounded by family and distinguished guests, including the President Dame Sandra Mason.

In a heartfelt tribute at the quiet get-together, Walters’s son, Robert Walters, reminisced about his mother’s life. He recalled her resilience and dedication in raising six children, despite their challenges in those times.

“It was tough growing up, especially in the 60s when wages were low and life was hard,” Robert shared. “But Mum worked tirelessly as a cook in hotels and private homes, sometimes for long hours, to provide for us.”

He recalled how his mother demonstrated commitment beyond her work. She taught her children the importance of education, discipline, and family unity.

“Mum was adamant about education. She made sure we went to school and got an education so that we could do better than she did,” he explained, highlighting how she prioritised their future despite her own limited opportunities.

Paulette Beckles, Walters’s daughter, also shared her appreciation for their mother’s nurturing spirit.

“She was our teacher, our friend, and our guide,” Paulette said, smiling fondly. “She took us to church every Sunday and ensured that we knew the value of hard work and family.”

As the first in her family to reach 100, Walters has become an enduring symbol of strength and perseverance. Her children fondly remembered her small acts of care, such as her meticulous grocery lists well into her late 90s, ensuring her household ran smoothly. Despite her advancing years, her sharp mind and commitment to her family never faltered.

Her dedication and determination did not go unnoticed by her children.

“Mum was always the driving force in our family,” Robert said. “She kept us together through thick and thin, and for that, we are forever grateful.”

As the family gathered to celebrate her centenary, Paulette expressed her gratitude for her unwavering dedication. “Mum, we thank you for everything you’ve done for us.”

She concluded: “You’ve raised us to be strong, compassionate, and loving individuals, and for that, we are truly blessed.” (LG)
