St Lucy hails volunteer groundsman Boyce

As part of We Gatherin’ Barbados, organisers are highlighting outstanding individuals who have contributed immensely to the St Lucy community. One such is Trevor Boyce, a dedicated volunteer at Lord’s Cricket Ground, St Lucy.

For over three decades, Boyce has been a steadfast pillar of the cricketing community in St Lucy. Since 1984, Boyce’s unwavering dedication has played a crucial role in maintaining the cherished local venue.

Boyce’s journey began when he finished school in 1984 and became a member of the Lord’s Cricket Club. Over the years, he has taken on multiple roles, including coach, mentor, and groundskeeper, ensuring that the field remains in prime condition for aspiring cricketers.

His contributions extend beyond maintenance; he has nurtured young talents from the nearby Ignatius Byer Primary School, formerly known as St Clement’s Primary School. His commitment to supporting young players has helped foster a thriving cricketing culture in the community.

Through his years of volunteering, Boyce has seen many young cricketers grow into professional players. Notable names include international fast bowler Kemar Roach, Mardon Benn of Spartan Cricket Club, and Jair McAllister, a promising Under-19 player. His own sons, Mario and Jamal Boyce, have represented Barbados at the Under-15 and Under-13 levels, respectively.

Despite his deep passion for maintaining the grounds, Boyce has faced some challenges over the years. One of his biggest struggles has been dealing with loose cattle straying onto the field, as well as the effects of heavy rainfall, which can make pitch preparation difficult. However, his perseverance and commitment to his work have ensured that the venue remains a treasured space for local cricket enthusiasts.

Boyce’s work at Lord’s Cricket Ground is not just a task but a labor of love. Mowing the grass, maintaining the pitch, and ensuring a safe playing surface can take up to two and a half hours per session, sometimes stretching over a week. Yet, his greatest motivation is seeing the community make use of the space, whether for local competitions or school matches.

Boyce takes pride in the little gem that Lord’s Cricket Ground has become in St Lucy as visiting teams, both local and international, often marvel at the ground’s quality, which he diligently upkeeps.

For Trevor Boyce, volunteering is more than just maintaining a cricket field—it is about giving back to the community. His contributions have inspired many, and he remains dedicated to ensuring that young players have access to a well-kept and welcoming cricket facility.

His work has not gone unnoticed, as those who use the ground often express their appreciation, and Boyce remains open to feedback for improvements, continuously striving to enhance the facilities.

As long as cricket is played at Lord’s Cricket Ground, St Lucy, Trevor Boyce’s name will be synonymous with the passion, dedication, and love for the sport that has kept the game alive in his community for over 30 years.
