Azaria Alleyne dominated both sides of the court as Springer Memorial defeated Lester Vaughan Secondary in an exciting encounter on Wednesday to claim the final playoff spot in the National Sports Council (NSC) Girls Basketball Competition.
Looking to join defending champions Lodge School, Queen’s College, and St George Secondary in the semifinals, the winner of this game would finish with a three wins and a loss in Zone A, and automatically gain a place in the final four.
Both teams showed a hint of nerves early in the game as neither could score baskets while they continued to rack up the turnovers, the score being 6-4 after the first quarter in favor of the Lester Vaughan (LV) girls.
Playing on their home court in Government Hill, the Springer girls used the motivation of their coach Dean Squires during the break to outscore LV 9-4 in the second quarter and take a slim 13-12 lead into the half.
The third quarter belonged to the home team as they held LV to zero points in the quarter and extended their lead to 19-12, going into the final period of the game. Quinesha Cox was the player of the game for the LV girls.
She scored a team high 14 points, including six in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough when the final whistle blew to end the game 27-18 in favor of Springer.
Alleyne proved unstoppable on both sides of the court, stealing balls on the defense while converting lay-ups on the offensive side as she scored a game high 21 points to lead Springer into the semifinals.
The matchups will see Springer traveling to Massiah Street and take on title favorites Lodge on their home court while Queens College will play host to the St George girls. The semifinals will be played on Monday, February 3rd at 3 p.m. (ZM)
