Clapham and City United cruise to victory

The 246 Mobile Shop City United Celtics dismissed the Warrens All Stars 99-60 on Friday evening, while the Burger King Clapham Bulls sent the NSC Combined Schools packing, with a 106-50 whopping in the Co-operators General Insurance, Barbados Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) Premier League.

At the top of the rankings sit both the Celtics and Bulls, and Warrens and the Tridents are at the other end of the spectrum, so the results were expected. City United dealt mostly in threes, attempting and scoring more shots from the outside. That barrage of shooting, 20 of 26 from the three-point line was way more than Warrens could handle. By the end of the first quarter, the score was 36-19; at halftime, it was 55-29.

Renico Brewster of City started the game hot in the Barbados Community College (BCC) gym, hitting four of four treys in the first half but went cold in the second, unable to match his form at the beginning.  Brewster finished with 18, and Kiserian Adams matched that tally but added eight rebounds. However, it was Deroni Hurley, with a game-high 20 points, including six treys (three in the fourth) and seven assists, that had the hot hand down the stretch. Joshua Gibbs also had a good game with 17 points courtesy of five made threes.

Warrens had no answer for the flow of points but coming out for the fourth quarter, Warrens played with heart. Unfortunately, the shooting by Hurley was demoralising due to the effortless way in which the Celtics scored points from the outside. The lead was 45 (95-50) by City with five minutes to play, but some showboating and a preference to shoot only from the outside allowed Warrens to avoid giving up 100 points by the opposition.

Celtic Kiserian Adams blocks this shot attempt by Manuel Alleng of Warrens.

Johnathan Dottin of the All-Stars played well in what has to be his best premier league season. Dottin cleaned up the boards and rebounded well in the game to top score for Warrens with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kaliel Austin shot 80% from beyond the arc, scoring four threes on his way to 12 points. Khamal Boyce also added nine points, and Manuel Alleng and Jamar King added eight points.

Only Zane Gaskin, Tyler Forde and Darreon Griffin put up much of a fight for the Combined Schools Tridents against Clapham. Gaskin had a team-high 16 points, while Forde and Griffin had eight each. The Tridents have had it hard compared to last year but have lost at least four players overseas after picking up scholarships over the summer. The tale was 50-18 at halftime and 76-34 at the end of the third.

Simeon Maynard had a night high 27 points against the youngsters, inclusive of six treys. Derion Maynard scored 24, and Rasheed Maynard was good for 21 points and 13 rebounds. Akeem Marsh added 11 points while Shane Rock had 10.

The final games of the premier league regular season first round are today at the BCC. The results will decide the final rankings before the President’s Cup Tournament starts on Tuesday, February 25th, at the Wildey Gymnasium. (AS)
