Barbados and West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin produced a quick-fire knock and snatched two wickets, to help power Gujarat Giants Women to a dominant 81-run victory over Chinelle Henry’s UP Warriorz Women in the Women’s Premier League on Monday.
Playing at the Ekana International Cricket Stadium in Lucknow, India, Giants racked up an imposing 186 for five, with opener Beth Mooney narrowly missing out on a hundred with 96 not out off 59 deliveries.
Harleen Deol weighed in with 45 off 32 deliveries while Dottin, arriving at number five in the 17th over, blasted two fours and a six in an eight-ball 17, to help Giants reach their eventual total.
West Indies all-rounder Henry, handed the new ball, finished with one for 31 from her four overs and then top-scored with 28 from 14 balls as Warriorz were dismissed for 105 at the start of the 18th over.
New-ball seamer Kashvee Gautam (3-11) and left-arm spinner Tanuja Kanwar (3-17) picked up three wickets apiece while Dottin, who shared the new ball, picked up two for 18 from three excellent overs.
The result saw Giants move into second spot in the standings on six points while Warriorz continued to languish at the bottom with four points.
Player-of-the-Match Mooney produced the impetus needed after Giants were sent in, punching 17 fours to dominate a 101-run second wicket stand with Deol and a 40-run partnership with captain Ashleigh Gardner (11), after Dayalan Hemalatha (2) perished to the sixth ball of the game from Henry with only three runs on the board.
Deol struck half-dozen fours before falling in the 13th over and Dottin made her time at the crease count, posting 21 for the fourth wicket with Mooney before missing a reverse sweep at left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone (2-34) and falling lbw.
In reply, Warriorz were never really in the hunt after slumping to 13 for three at the start of the fourth over, Dottin the main architect of the destruction with two wickets in the first over.
First, she removed Kiran Navgire with the second ball of the innings for a first ball “duck”, caught at slip trying to hit through the off-side and then comprehensively bowled Georgia Voll, also without scoring, with the fifth delivery.
Going nowhere at 48 for six at the end of the 10th over, Warriorz were aided by a Henry’s counter-attack as the right-hander belted three fours and two sixes in a seventh wicket stand of 35 with Uma Chetry (17).
But once Henry holed out in the deep in the 14th over off Kanwar, the resistance all but ended. (BT)
