Dario Dvon, a Barbadian performer making waves in Toronto, has brought his island roots to the stage with a standout portrayal of Sebastian, the wily crab in The Little Mermaid at Toronto Youth Theatre. With his unique blend of talent, charisma, and cultural pride, Dario is proving that dreams nurtured in the Caribbean can blossom on international stages.
Dario Dvon was beyond excited when he found out he had landed the role in the musical. Playing such an iconic character that he grew up watching felt surreal, and bringing Sebastian to life on stage became a dream come true. To prepare for the role, he studied the performances of Samuel E Wright, Shaggy, and Tituss Burgess, drawing inspiration while adding his own unique twist. Infusing Sebastian with a bit of Bajan essence made the character feel even more authentic to him.
One of the biggest challenges in the production has been performing Under the Sea, a number that demands fast-paced lyrics, high-energy dancing, and strong vocals—all at the same time. But Dario thrives on challenges and uses his vocal expertise and stage presence to make Sebastian a vibrant and memorable character. Performing at TYT in Toronto has been an incredibly rewarding experience for him. Artistic director Evan Harkai has cultivated a space where artists feel safe and supported, and Dario has found immense joy in working alongside the talented cast and crew.
A particularly powerful moment came during the first full run-through of the show. As he stepped into the character, it truly hit him—he was playing Sebastian! It was a defining moment that reminded him how far he had come in making his childhood dream a reality. Connecting with Sebastian comes naturally for Dario. As an island boy at heart, he relates to the character’s deep love for the sea. Additionally, as a vocal coach, he finds similarities in Sebastian’s mentor-like qualities, guiding and supporting those around him.
Dario hopes audiences will feel Sebastian’s heart, his care for Ariel, and his dedication to keeping her safe. Beyond theatre, he has recently experienced another career milestone—winning at The RBC Black Diamond Ball. The recognition is still sinking in, but he feels incredibly proud and grateful for the moment. This win is especially significant because it marks the first time he has won a competition with an original song entitled King. The judges’ praise for his lyrics and message reassured him that his songwriting is making an impact.
Competing in The RBC Black Diamond Ball vocalist competition was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. Each artist had just 90 seconds to impress the judges with their vocal technique, artistry, and international appeal. Last year, Dario was in the audience watching, and this year, he walked away victorious—a full-circle moment he will never forget. The competition has opened new doors, providing visibility, financial support, and a platform to showcase his artistry. The future feels limitless, and he is eager to take this opportunity to build his dream even further.
For young Black artists striving for success in the performing arts, Dario shares a message of resilience and self-belief: “If you look for negativity, you’ll find it—but you control your own story. There will always be ups and downs, but your perspective is everything. Believe in yourself, even when others don’t, and keep pushing forward.”
Balancing theatre and other creative projects is no easy feat, but Dario approaches it with determination. He sets goals, stays positive, and focuses on maintaining balance in his life. With The Little Mermaid and his Black Diamond Ball win under his belt, he is now gearing up for his next big endeavour—his first EP, Livin’ the Dream. The project tells a deeply personal story of self-love, acceptance, and freedom of expression. It is a passion project that he cannot wait to share with the world.
Through his work in theatre and beyond, Dario hopes to inspire others to embrace their talents and live their truth. He believes that artistic gifts are meant to shine and, in doing so, inspire others to step into their own greatness. The journey continues—and for Dario Dvon—the best is yet to come.
