Barbados go down to T&T in Super50 Cup final

Barbados Women’s bid to win the Regional Super50 Cup ended in bitter disappointment when they slumped to a seven-wicket defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in the final at Warner Park in St Kitts on Friday.

Sent in, Barbados were bundled out for a dismal 71 off 29 overs with only Asabi Callender with a top score of 28 off 64 deliveries showing any enterprise. In fact, she was only one of two players in double figures and the only one to pass 15.

The Barbadians found themselves undermined by a potent Trinidadian spin attack, veteran former West Indies off-spinner Anisa Mohammed leading the way with three for 17 from seven overs.

Karishma Ramharack finished with two for 12, more importantly claiming the wickets of the in-form Knight twins, Kycia and Kyshona, while fellow off-spinner Samara Ramnath (2-20) and seamer Amrita Ramtahal (2-5) also picked up two wickets each.

In reply, Trinidad and Tobago reached their target in the 24th over with 21-year-old West Indies batsman Djenaba Joseph top-scoring with 28 from 63 balls.

“I think as a team we probably feel a little heartbroken,” Barbados captain Aaliyah Alleyne said afterwards.

“I think we came so far but we weren’t competitive enough today and I think that was what was more disappointing about today.”

The final was a carbon copy of Barbados’ defeat to T&T last Monday – their only loss in the preliminaries – when they were routed for 76 and went down by five wickets.

Ramharack removed Kycia Knight without scoring with four runs on the board in the fourth over, the left-hander squirting a simple catch to point. However, Callender engineered the best stand of the innings when she put on 34 for the second wicket with Trishan Holder (15).

Even when Holder cut Mohammed straight to point and perished in the 14th over, there was still no sign of the collapse that ensued but nerves crept in when Kyshona Knight sliced a drive to slip to depart for one in the 16th over, leaving Barbados on 47 for three.

Barbados appeared to be fighting back at 60 for three but the wicket of Naijanni Cumberbatch (7) opened the floodgates and the last seven wickets crashed for just 11 runs in the space of 57 balls.

Alleyne was run out without scoring in a comedic mixup in the 21st with Callender who fell a few deliveries in the same over, plumb lbw to a straight one from Ramtahal.

Chasing a straightforward target, Trinidad and Tobago were led by Joseph, the right-hander putting on 21 for the first wicket with Shunelle Sawh (9) and a further 41 for the second wicket with the experienced Britney Cooper (17).

Fast bowler Shamilia Connell (2-15) claimed the first two wickets to fall, Sawh top-edging a pull to be taken at mid-on in the seventh over and Cooper tugging a low catch to short mid-wicket.

Joseph, dropped on 13 by Callender at mid off, eventually fell caught and bowled to leg-spinner Keila Elliott’s first ball of the contest but Lee-Ann Kirby (six not out) clobbered the very next delivery over the ropes at mid-wicket to end the game.
