The greatest cricketer the world has ever seen is now mourning.
Son of the soil, The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers has lost his most precious partner at the crease of life.
Jackie White, the consort of Sir Garry – the only male living national hero – passed away today at home in Highgate Gardens, St Michael following a long illness.
She was 73.
Marketing and Communications manager at the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA)Steven Leslie described White as cordial while offering condolences to Sir Garry.
“Having learnt of the passing of Jackie, it really has caused us to be very sad knowing her very close relationship with The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers,” Leslie said.
“Jackie attended all matches, regional and international and always had a very pleasant demeanour. She was very engaging and once she got to know you, you saw a very caring side.
“The BCA wants to extend condolences to Sir Garry and prayers during this difficult time.”
Sir Garry, 88, has long been considered the world’s greatest cricketer, following a stellar career during which he redefined the game.
A former West Indies captain, Sir Garry scored 8 032 Tests and took 235 wickets from 93 Tests, chalking up a then world record 365 not out which was eventually broken by Brian Lara.
