Ground has been broken for two new dormitories at the Regional Police Training Centre (RPTC), a $10 million project aimed at increasing the police service.
Each dormitory is designed to house 30 recruits, potentially boosting the service from 99 to 155 officers.
While originally intended to support the growing number of female recruits, the dorms will be unisex.
The development comes amid Attorney General Dale Marshall’s concerns about women being denied entry to the police service due to a lack of adequate facilities.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, Marshall praised the initiative as one that will address the recruitment challenges, further lauding what he said will be improved infrastructure to support a more diverse force.
Construction is expected to take 40 weeks, with completion set for January. The dormitories will be hurricane-resistant and eco-friendly, equipped with water storage tanks to ensure operations continue during emergencies.
Officials say the new facilities will enhance training conditions and allow for more recruitment, strengthening national security efforts.(SM)
