In a major boost for conservation and environmental education in Barbados, the island’s first osprey nesting and monitoring platform was officially launched at Walker’s Reserve in St Andrew on Wednesday.
The initiative, led by the Walkers Institute for Regenerative Research, Education, and Design (WIRRED) in collaboration with the British High Commission, aims to support migratory bird habitats, gather critical ecological data, and raise awareness about biodiversity.
“Ospreys are attracted to healthy ecosystems with clean water and abundant fish,” said Georgina Thornton, WIRRED Project Coordinator. “Their presence shows the environment is thriving, and this platform will help us collect much-needed data while engaging the public.”
Chargé d’affaires at the British High Commission Charley Williams, who officially opened the platform, said, “The UK is proud to support this effort. Protecting biodiversity is a global priority, and projects like this connect young people with nature and build conservation awareness.”
Equipped with a live stream camera, the platform will allow students, birdwatchers, and visitors to observe ospreys in real time.
The project is part of a wider commitment to restoring 30 per cent of land, freshwater, and sea by 2030 under the UN’s global biodiversity framework.
