David Litte Dave Husbands Jr. will be stepping out of his BMW M3 into an immaculately turned-out Volkswagen Polo GTI R5 for the Rally2 Championship. The Polo GTI R5 is the same vehicle Callum Devine raced last year in the Irish Tarmac Championship and finished fourth.
David, the nephew of Barbadian top jockey Patrick Husbands, has been rallying for only one year and is eager to tackle the top drivers at the sharp end.
He made his debut in the Shake Down Stages aboard a BMW M3 and had done three events during the year, the others being King of the Hill and Rally Barbados.
When asked what made him make the transition from two-wheel drive into the more powerful 4-wheel drive turbo charge 1600 Volkswagen Polo GTI R5, Husbands told Barbados TODAY he wants to go after the top drivers in the R5 class, although he admits it will be a learning experience.
“I want to win Rally Barbados someday,” the 28-year-old driver said. “This type of car is the only way I can do it.” He admitted it will not be easy with Brothers Stuart and Mark Maloney, Jeff Panton, and Kyle Gregg to name a few, who are very talented and fast drivers in the Rally 2 championship.
Husbands, who is from a family of jockeys, recently tested his new mount in Germany, said it went well and that he had learnt a lot.
Mechanic Kyle King of King Auto and a team will be looking after the Polo GTI R5. “I would like to thank my Sponsor, King Auto for coming on board with me. Without them, I could not make this a reality,” Husbands said. (Kent Layne)
