Wanderers juniors set for UK tour with Sandy Lane Trust partnership

Wanderers Junior Cricket is preparing for an exciting overseas tour that promises to be a milestone in the development of its young players.

A group of twenty-six cricketers, aged eight to eighteen, will head to the United Kingdom for a two-week cricket and cultural experience in July.

Answering the call for assistance, the Sandy Lane Trust presented the Wanderers Cricket Club’s Youth Programme with a cheque for $16 500 on Wednesday at the Denis and Eric Atkinson Pavilion in Daryl’s Road, to give a much needed boost to the tour’s success.

The UK tour is a major initiative by the Wanderers club to provide international exposure to their most promising talents. With a youth program that supports sixty-eight boys, the club is committed to developing cricketing skill, discipline, and teamwork. This tour goes beyond sport as it opens doors to scholarship opportunities and personal growth for young athletes.

Kraigg Brathwaite, former West Indies Test captain and a proud product of the Wanderers Juniors system, will join the touring group as Assistant Coach.

The itinerary includes ten matches over the course of the trip, as well as visits to key locations such as Scarborough for scholarship presentations, Birmingham for cultural exchanges, and historical tours through London and Brentwood.

Wanderers Juniors is especially grateful for the support of the Sandy Lane Trust, which has partnered with the club to help cover some of the tour’s expenses. Their involvement will directly assist six young players in need of uniforms and equipment.

“We are happy to have the Sandy Lane Trust come on board in assisting our young players and covering some of our tour expenses,” said Ricky Clarke, Tour Manager and Head Coach of Wanderers Juniors.

“We believe that this partnership will not only benefit our players but also enhance the reputation of the Sandy Lane trust as a champion of youth development and sportsmanship.”

Founding trustee of the Sandy Lane Trust, Derrick Smith, was on hand to make the presentation.

“We at the Sandy Lane Trust are delighted to help with the upcoming tour to England that Wanderers are undertaking. This is a great thing that Ricky Clarke and his team are doing. They’re keeping some of the lads out of trouble and off the streets. Not only that but also to develop them in a team sport such as cricket.” said Smith, adding “Hopefully, and I know he tells me how many people from Wanderers have made it into first class cricket, and let’s hope we can get some more out of the tour that they are undertaking, and we wish them all the very best of luck.” (AS)
