CHRISTMAS PROMOTION

#BTChristmas message – BWU reports progress in uplifting workers

Christmas Address by General Secretary Toni Moore, Barbados Workers’ Union

Comrades and friends,

As the cooler breezes of the Barbadian Christmas season sweep across our beautiful island, I bring you holiday greetings filled with gratitude and hope. As we enjoy this period filled with beautiful decorations and joyful carols, we are reminded of the true spirit of Christmas – a time of love, unity, and reflection on the blessings we have received.

This year, the Barbados Workers’ Union, under the mantra ‘It’s About You’, has journeyed through a remarkable path of progress and empowerment. Together, we have achieved significant milestones that have not only uplifted our workers but also strengthened the fabric of our society.

We recall the resilience and solidarity shown by our KFC workers, who stood firmly against poor working conditions, a testament to our collective strength. In the tourism industry, The National Level Agreement I recently announced, set to receive legislative backing in the new year, marks a pivotal step towards securing fairer work conditions.

Our campaign for the rights of hotel workers, with its detailed approach of pop-ups, worker testimonials, and rallies, exemplified our commitment to each individual’s well-being and dignity. The successful resolution of the Bridgetown Duty-Free dispute showcased the power of constructive dialogue and negotiation.

This year also brought a fresh wave of energy to our union, with younger people joining the movement, drawn by our dedication to representing and fighting for their future. The reinvigorating of our membership and the focus on empowering our shop stewards through the Frank Walcott Labour College are milestones we cherish.

Our May Day Family Picnic at the National Botanical Gardens, attended by over ten thousand people, was a vibrant testament to the strength, vitality and perception of this great union.

Even as we are filled with pride about these achievements, we are reminded of the teachings of Christ, who championed the cause of the humble and the oppressed. In this season of giving, let us remember that our work is far from over. There is much to be done, and we must continue to stand united in our quest for justice and equality.

As we look towards the future, let us do so with the courage and determination that have defined us this year. Let us remember that true change comes not just from standing for ourselves but from standing together as a community, as a country and as a family.

So, this Christmas, on behalf of the Executive Council of the Barbados Workers’ Union, I extend to you not just a message of love and hope but also a call to action – to continue being brave and united. Let us move into the new year with the resolve to make Barbados an even better place for all its workers.

May the peace and joy of Christmas fill your hearts and homes, and may the blessings of the Lord guide us as we continue our journey together. Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones, and a prosperous New Year!
