A newly formed entertainment hub has the promotion of local spoken word artists and the beauty of spoken word at the centre of its focus.
PoeTree Barbados is set to host its first event — A Celebration of Spoken Word — on February 29 at 8 p.m. at The Sage Bar, Maxwell, Christ Church.
The inaugural event will feature NIFCA Theater Bronze Medalist Theo Deo The Poet Greenidge as the headline act.
Organizer La Shawna Griffith said these events are needed to introduce people to the talented spoken word artists that can be found on the island.
“Poetry in Barbados is a small close-knit society and I want to change that. My goal with PoeTree is to highlight spoken word in a new and refreshing light, allowing persons to see not only the award-winning poets but also the up-and-coming poets who have so much talent and lyrical prowess that they bring to the table,” she said.
“When our team was deciding who should headline our inaugural event we decided on Deo The Poet. As a first-time finalist in NIFCA Theater 2023, he truly made his presence felt with the way he commanded the stage and walked away with two bronze medals. We believe that he will truly bring that energy and passion to the audience at Sage Bar on February 29, 2024.”
The event will also feature performances by Ashley Serieux, Rae Writes, Cher-Antionette, Daniel Boxill, Michron Robinson, Jae Serieux, Ariel Hamilton, Zoe Sunshine, Safiyyah and Malachi Hope.
Griffith noted that the events, which are scheduled to be held every last Thursday at Sage Bar, will have different themes moving forward and that persons will be introduced to various headliners each month.
“What we are doing each month is letting not only poets be the headliners, we are also doing fusions between poetry and spoken word so that members of the audience can have something new and fresh each time they come to PoetTree Barbados. Because ultimately, we want persons to come down to the event, and enjoy our product for a nominal fee of $20, whilst walking away feeling enamoured with the amount of talent Barbados has to offer,” she said.
