Ifill: Open Day a triumph for BDF and community

Scores of residents and visitors descended on the Barbados Defence Force (BDF) base at Paragon on Saturday, eager to find out more about the body’s operation.

The occasion was the Force’s 45th Anniversary Open Day. In addition to the BDF, Barbados Coast Guard, and the Barbados Regiment, the event also featured the Barbados Cadet Corps, the Barbados Police Service, the Barbados Fire Service, and the Roving Response Team.

The officer in charge of the festivities, Second Lt Rico Ifill, told reporters that it was a triumph for both the Defence Force and the community.

“It provided a unique opportunity for the public to witness firsthand the capabilities of our defence assets and learn about the important work we do,” he said.

Also on display was a diverse range of military equipment and some assets from the international forces taking part in Exercise Tradewinds 2024, including helicopters from the US and Mexico, as well as drone technologies from the US Army.

“We want the public to not only see our equipment but also understand the vital role it plays in safeguarding our nation,” Ifill said.

“It’s incredible to have all these resources in one place and to learn about the various branches of our defence forces. It really opens your eyes to our capabilities.”

The participation of international allies further underscored the event’s significance in strengthening regional partnerships.

Ifill acknowledged the support of US and Caribbean partners, stating, “Their presence here demonstrates the solidarity and cooperation among nations in our shared commitment to security and defence.” (RG)
